Research shows that up to 90% of fatal bicycle crashes are the results of head trauma. A properly worn and certified bicycle helmet cushions and protects the head from injurious impacts with hard surfaces such as asphalt and concrete.
Florida law requires that a bicycle rider or passenger under the age of 16 years of age MUST wear a bicycle helmet that is properly fitted, fastened securely and meets a nationally recognized standard.
Sebastian Police Department has teamed up with the Department of Health, Office of Injury Prevention, who has received a "Florida Bicycle Helmet Promotion Program" grant from the Florida Department of Transportation in an effort to promote bicycle safety education.
Sebastian Police Department will distribute the helmets to needy children free of charge to increase the usage of helmets among children 16 years of age and under.
Interested citizens may contact a patrol officer who may have a helmet in their vehicle or contact School Resource Officer Ashley Penn at 772-589-5233 extension 8573.
