School Resource

                                                                        SRO Bill Jursik

Our School Resource Officer, Bill Jursik, works closely with the D.A.R.E., R.A.D. for Kids, and the G.R.E.A.T. Programs.

The D.A.R.E. Program (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) is the pioneer prevention effort founded by law enforcement in Los Angeles in 1983. D.A.R.E. is community policing.  It humanizes the police, that is, young people can begin to relate to officers as people.  It permits students to see officers in a helping role, not just an enforcement role.  It opens lines of communications between law enforcement and youth.  Officers can serve as conduits to provide information beyond drug-related topics.  It opens dialog between the school, police and parents to deal with other issues. This program is proceeding well, with a great deal of support from the community.

The G.R.E.A.T. Program is a school based law enforcement officer instructed classroom curriculum.  The program’s primary objective is prevention and is intended as an immunization against delinquency, youth violence, and gang membership.

The R.A.D. for Kids Program is a dynamic and exciting program where children learn about safety awareness and physical defense.  It is the most comprehensive, life changing children’s education program of its kind.

Officer Jursik has been a School Resource Officer with our agency since 1999.  He works following the guidelines from these programs to educate our youth.  Currently they have implemented more family support for the Core Family’s Program.  Students in our G.R.E.A.T. Program are currently working on a project to build a literacy garden at the Charter School that will provide students with a pleasant area to sit and read during the day.

The 2006 summer camp, with 25 students enrolled, ran from May 30th to June 9, 2006, and was a total success. The children were enthusiastic about the many varied activities and couldn't wait to come back for the 2007 year.
