HISTORY OF THE SEBASTIAN POLICE DEPARTMENT

 

 

The City of Sebastian is located in Indian River County approximately 20 miles north of Vero Beach, on the Treasure Coast.  It is recognized as the home of Pelican Island, the first designated wildlife refuge in the United States.

 

The City of Sebastian was incorporated as the Town of Sebastian in 1924.  The town appointed its first Marshal in 1925.  The position was changed to Chief of Police in 1946.  Current population is approximately 22,500 and the City of Sebastian has seen rapid growth in the past several years.

 

Sebastian boasts beautiful parks, public and private elementary schools, a middle school, and an unobstructed view of the intercoastal waterway in the Indian River Lagoon, close proximity to Atlantic beaches, a year round temperature of 73.4 degrees, shops and restaurants, many churches, several City festivals held annually, concerts in the park, a municipal golf course, and airport.

 

The Sebastian Police Department consists of 40 sworn officers and 14 civilian support staff.  The department has three functional departments: Professional Standards, Road Patrol, and Support Services.

 

The Police Department, continues to promote the highest levels of professionalism and community service.  We are committed to address quality of life issues to ensure safety and security in the community and provide for efficient delivery of law enforcement services in the Sebastian community.
