Sebastian Police Department’s Bicycle Helmet Safety Program

Research shows that up to 90% of fatal bicycle crashes are the result of head trauma. A properly worn and certified bicycle helmet cushions and protects the head from injurious impacts with hard surfaces such as asphalt and concrete.

Florida law state that a bicycle rider or passenger under the age of 16 years of age must wear a bicycle helmet that is properly fitted, fastened securely and meets a nationally recognized standard.

Sebastian Police Department has teamed up with the Department of Health, Office of Injury Prevention, who has received a “Florida Bicycle Helmet Promotion Program” Grant from the Florida Department of Transportation in an effort to promote bicycle safety education.

Sebastian Police Department will distribute the helmets to needy children free of charge to increase the usage of helmets among children 16 years of age and under.

Interested citizens may contact a patrol officer, who may have helmets in their vehicles or contact Community Policing Specialist Officer Steve Marcinik at the Sebastian Police Department at (772) 589-5233 ext 8576.
