Here are some important tips that you should consider:

Never put outgoing mail in residential mailboxes. Take mail to the post office or deposit it in the blue USPS boxes. 

Remove incoming mail from your mailbox as soon as possible. Stop mail delivery or have a trusted neighbor pick up your mail, even if you are away for only a short period of time. 

Always shred  credit card applications, and any other documents that contains your personal information.
